Fishing

Belize fishing is famous among avid anglers, and Glover’s Reef Atoll is the best of the best. A National Marine Reserve surrounds Long Caye, and as a result, the fish populations are the healthiest in Belize (according to the National Fisheries Department). Guests can enjoy excellent, self-guided spincasting or fly fishing by wading right off the island into waters abound with jack, barracuda, and snapper, which readily take spinners.

What to bring:

  • Lures
  • Fishing tackle
  • Flies
  • 8-weight fly rod, 9’ in length, with a marine floating line with 10-15 lb leaders
  • For a reel, use any saltwater compatible with plenty of backing (200+ feet)
  • Polarized sunglasses
  • Ankle-high booties
  • See recommended gear here

Fly Fishing

If you want to explore and improve your skills in spotting fish with few other fishermen around, Long Caye is the perfect place for you. Wade into the water or fly cast from shore to tarpon, bonefish, and permit. All fishing is catch-and-release only, and sport fishermen will be rewarded with non-stop action! The only exception to the catch-and-release rule is Lionfish. They are invasive, and everyone is encouraged to spear as many as possible. We provide the spear guns, or you can bring your own.

Kayak Fishing

Long Caye is a prime location for kayak fishing at Glover’s Reef Atoll. The latest fishing kayaks are equipped with tackle storage, rod holders, fish holds, and anchors, providing an alternative to fishing from the shore or dock. A sit-on-top kayak’s versatility and stealth capabilities make it easier to reach fantastic fishing locations and allow fishermen to access fishing spots that would otherwise require hiring a guide and boat.
Although trolling on the outer reef is not always possible, a variety of fish species, such as grouper, dorado, permit, kingfish, and marlin, can be found on the outer wall, just 100 yards away from your cabana!
